Common Skin Problems In Dogs
Our animal buddies have skin below all that fur, just like humans. One of the most prevalent illnesses that dogs might have is skin disorders, which have a wide range of causes, diseases, and treatments. Skin conditions can range in severity from minor to severe, and some can spread to humans and other animals. Here are a few of the most prevalent skin conditions that affect dogs, along with how to treat them:
- Allergies
Dogs can experience dermatitis, an illness and inflammation caused by food and environmental allergies, just like their human counterparts. environmental irritants such as cat dander, mites, dust, mould, grass, and more! Redness, an itchy rash (especially on the face, feet, chest, and stomach), nasal irritation resembling hay fever, and secondary bacterial and fungal skin and ear infections can all be signs of environmental allergies. Similar symptoms may be caused by allergic reactions to food, which are less frequent than irritants in the environment and are year-round rather than seasonal.
- Parasites
Organisms known as parasites feed on other living things and frequently harm their hosts. Unfortunately, dogs are the perfect hosts for these parasites because of their fur-covered bodies. Let's talk about some of the most prevalent parasites that affect dogs:
- Mange: A skin disorder brought on by mites, mange. This illness, which is frequently observed in abandoned or stray dogs, causes ulcers and lesions on the skin, which lead to hair loss, severe scabbing, and itching. There are two kinds of mange: sarcoptic and demodectic. The most typical kind is sarcoptic mange, sometimes known as canine scabies. Although mites cannot survive for long on human hosts, it is extremely communicable to both dogs and people.
- Fleas: Fleas are a parasite that is known to bite and infest dogs, making your dog itch a lot. This might result in bleeding and hair loss if left untreated. Fleas are extremely contagious for both pets and pet parents since they may invade houses and attack humans as well.
- Ticks: Ticks can still be difficult to notice, but they are much larger than fleas and mites, making them easier to see with the human eye. Unlike smaller parasites, ticks do not spread disease to dogs or people, yet many of them do carry dangerous diseases. Unfortunately, you won't be able to tell whether your dog has been bitten by a tick until they begin to exhibit symptoms of diseases transmitted by ticks, such as fever, lameness and lethargy, swelling around the joints, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
- Immune-Mediated Illness
Like humans, dogs are prone to autoimmune illnesses. Dandruff, pustules, skin erosions, redness, hair loss, and thicker paw pads are all possible symptoms of these disorders, including pemphigus. This illness can resemble other issues, such as bacterial skin infections, but it is rarely itchy and doesn't react to antibiotics.
- Tumours and Cancer
Dogs frequently develop lumps and bumps, but not all of them are cancerous. In elderly dogs, lipomas, benign, fatty tumours, are fairly prevalent. Typically, your veterinarian can determine if a bulge is malignant or not by taking a small sample of cells from it using a thin needle, staining them, and then examining them under a microscope.
Due to the similarities in symptoms between dermatitis, parasites, and fungal diseases, it can be challenging to identify specific skin issues in dogs immediately away. Normally, your dog's skin will be examined by the vet, who will also run any necessary tests. They'll also be interested in any information you can recall that might have contributed to the current problem. This could involve introducing new items into your home, exposing your dog to a novel setting, or noticing symptoms in your dog at a certain time of day.
Depending on the condition, treatment options may include topical creams, sprays, special shampoos, dietary supplements, or drugs either orally or intravenously.
