Foods You Can Share With Your Dog
Dogs are built differently from us, and something that might seem like a harmless snack to you can be harmful to your dog. To help you stay worry free the next time your pet gives you the puppy dog eyes while begging for some scraps, we've put together a list of foods that are safe for canine consumption.
Here goes:
Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is a healthy snack loaded with vitamin B, niacin and vitamin E. Be careful to watch out for xylitol in your peanut butter as the artificial sweetener is not suitable for dogs. Most peanut butter brands may not have xylitol listed in their ingredients, so the safer bet would be to whip up some fresh peanut butter at home.
Green beans
An excellent source of plant fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, and manganese, green beans are a healthy low calorie snack your dog can enjoy. Feeding your dog green beans is especially helpful if your furry friend happens to be overweight. The beans make your dog feel full, helping them maintain a healthy weight.
Carrots
Carrots are a super food that can work wonders for both you and your dog. They are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients, making them excellent for your dog's heart. They even help regulate blood sugar levels and fight macular degeneration.
Apples
The occasional slice of an apple can be a delicious treat for your dog. Packed with vitamin A and C along with a lot of fiber, an apple is a good way to keep your dog's teeth clean. It is important to make sure you don't give your dog the core of an apple as its seeds can be toxic to them.
Chicken
Chicken is rich in protein and a number of nutrients like vitamin B12, amino acids, calcium, iron, carbohydrates and much more. However, you need to make sure you don't give your dog chicken cooked with a lot of salt and spices or cooked chicken bones as they can be a choking hazard.
Oats
Oats that don't contain any artificial sweeteners or added sugars can be a great source of fiber, iron and vitamin B6 for your dog. They can also help improve your furry companion's digestion. Being relatively low on protein, oats should be an occasional treat used only to complement your dog's normal meals, not replace them.
Pineapple
Raw pineapples are a delicious snack that many dogs love. Be sure to feed it to your dog in small amounts and avoid canned pineapples as they contain too much sugar. A few bit size might be something your dog will like.
Eggs
Eggs are rich in the kind of protein that dogs can digest easily. They also contain Vitamin A, riboflavin, Vitamin B12, iron, selenium and many other nutrients. A whole cooked egg will make a good treat, as raw egg whites can lead to a biotin deficiency.
Salmon
Home cooked salmon, prepared in less oil is a great source of protein for your pet. The presence of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in fish is highly beneficial to the health of your furry friend. A decent portion of salmon every once in a while, can give your dog a healthy coat of fur.
Yogurt
Unflavored yogurt that does not contain any added sugars is a cool treat that your dog will enjoy. Yogurt contains many good bacteria that can work wonders for your dog's digestive system. It can also serve to combat bad breath.
These foods may have a number of benefits, but as with anything, it is important to keep moderation in mind while sharing food with your dog. Bon appétit!
